Job Description

SALARY RANGE: Competitive

Founded in 1894, City, University of London is a global university committed to academic excellence with a focus on business and the professions and an enviable central London location.

City attracts around 20,000 students (over 40% at postgraduate level) from more than 150 countries and staff from over 75 countries.

In the last decade, City has almost tripled the proportion of its total academic staff producing world-leading or internationally excellent research. During this period, City has made significant investments in its academic staff, its estate and its infrastructure and continues to work towards realising its vision of being a leading global university.

The City Law School attracts students across all stages of legal education. It has a very long history of educating lawyers, judges, policymakers and business leaders dating back to the nineteenth century in the form of the Inns of Court Law School. Alumni include three British Prime Ministers, many of the City of London’s most prominent barristers, solicitors and judges, and leaders of a wide variety of business and community organisations.

The City Law School is the first in London and the only in the University of London to educate students and practitioners at all stages of legal education.  It has a professional education pedigree that dates back over 100 years. The School has made significant advances in both research and education and seeks to build upon that success to become one of the UK’s leading law schools as it takes advantage of the new regulatory landscape for legal education. The City Law School offers a complete portfolio of legal education and training, including undergraduate and postgraduate Law degrees, the Bar Vocational Studies programme, and the Legal Practice Course.

Starting last year, the School is significantly increasing the number of academic staff members while holding student numbers at their current levels and will continue to do so the next few years. This will allow for continued improvements in research, scholarship, teaching and learning, and the student experience and provides an opportunity for outstanding candidates to join the City Law School at an exciting time in its history

The School has over 2,500 students enrolled and in 2020, City’s academic and professional programmes for the first time, became housed together in a new purpose-designed building. This will provide greater opportunities for staff and students to collaborate across a range of academic and co-curricular activities, including a new law clinic and a wide range of pro bono initiatives.

The School is seeking to appoint outstanding academics who are passionate about providing students with the best possible education and co-curricular experience and enthusiastic about research that will advance legal knowledge and practice to the benefit of society.

For appointment on an Education & Research role profile, candidates will have produced, or will demonstrate the potential to produce, research of a world-leading and internationally excellent quality.  Candidates appointed on an Education role profile will focus on educational activity. All appointed candidates will have taught or will demonstrate the potential to teach to a very high standard and supervise students undertaking research.

The School is seeking to attract staff at all levels, from new entry positions (including new and emerging academics) through to recognised professorial leaders.  It will consider candidates who have researched, educated, or practised in any area of the Law, its theory, processes, and practice, although preference will be given to applicants able to contribute to the core subjects of the LLB.

We particularly encourage applicants from underrepresented groups and communities to apply, including those from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds and/or with characteristics protected under the Equalities Act including race, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment and religion & belief.
