Help us play a vital role in the justice system

A passion for criminal defence? Want to make a difference to society and help improve the UK criminal justice system? Dedicated to providing exceptional representation to your clients? Why not take your career to the next level with the PDS?

At the PDS, we specialise in – and only provide – legal aid criminal defence. This means we can focus on providing the best representation to those who cannot afford to pay. Providing and improving access to advice and representation is only part of what we do at the Public Defender Service. We’re working to shape a better system. It’s all about breaking new ground, improving the criminal justice system as a whole, and creating extraordinary careers for the people who join us.

We are looking for exceptional, enthusiastic, and dedicated lawyers and representatives at all levels to join our team. You’ll have experience of representing people accused or convicted of crimes at police stations or court. You will understand the complex needs of people caught up in the justice system and be dedicated to working with them compassionately and respectfully. You will be organised and able to think critically and quickly and be able to provide excellent advocacy and client care whether that’s in writing, at the police station, or on your feet in court. You will be dedicated to getting the best outcomes for your clients and to improving legal aid criminal defence across the UK.

At PDS Cheltenham, we provide a 24-hour, 365-day service representing clients in need at police stations, Magistrates’ Courts and Crown Courts across the Gloucestershire area, and are dedicated to providing outstanding levels of service at all times. It can be a tough job but it’s very rewarding, so if you are committed to public service and are looking for a role at the very forefront of delivering justice, find out more and apply today.

In return, we will provide you with the support and training that you need to do your job, as well as opportunities to develop your skills and progress within your career. We also offer a range of benefits including:

·       Generous overtime allowances

·       Competitive Civil Service pension scheme

·       Childcare vouchers

·       Cycle2work scheme

·       Access to employee savings including high street retailer offers and discounts

·       Generous annual leave (25 days leave, rising to 30 days after 5 years’ service), plus bank holidays

·       1 extra privilege day for the Kings birthday

·       3 days paid leave for volunteering

·       Wellbeing support and counselling

·       Occupational health support
