The JAC has been asked to identify 70 candidates for the post of Fee-paid Judge of the First-tier Tribunal – Immigration and Asylum Chamber. This is an excellent opportunity for solicitors, barristers and Fellows of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives. The vacancies arise in London, Birmingham, the North East (Bradford and Newcastle), Manchester, Scotland (Glasgow), Northern Ireland (Belfast) and Wales (Newport).
Overview of the Role
This exercise is specific to the Immigration and Asylum Chamber. The Immigration and Asylum Chamber is responsible for determining appeals against decisions made by the Secretary of State.
Appeals in the First-tier Tribunal (IAC) include:
● Persons seeking international protection in the United Kingdom (asylum or humanitarian protection).
● Whether a partner or child be allowed to enter or remain in the United Kingdom to enjoy family life or private life.
● Whether the rights of the appellant and family members are protected by the Withdrawal Agreement and the EU Settlement Scheme.
● Whether to grant bail to those who the Secretary of State has decided to detain pending removal from the United Kingdom.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this role, you must be a citizen of any of the following: the UK, another commonwealth country, or the Republic of Ireland. You must also have five years’ post-qualification experience as one of the following:
– Solicitor
– Barrister (qualified in England, Wales or Northern Ireland)
– Advocate (qualified in Scotland)
– Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives
You may also be eligible if you, in the Senior President of Tribunals’ opinion, have gained experience in law which makes you suitable for appointment.
