Tackle unparalleled challenges in our high-achieving team.

Who we are

CLGp is a dynamic and specialist commercial legal service, which was launched in June 2014, to create for the first time, a single expert source of commercial legal advice across government. Whilst our legal work is often novel and challenging, CLGp is friendly and welcoming, with a strong culture of collaborating and supporting one another. Feedback from our lawyers taking part in the most recent Civil Service People Survey demonstrates that staff can rely upon each other to help when things get difficult, are treated fairly at work and are proud to work for CLGp and GLD.

There are approximately 190 lawyers in CLGp, currently led by Justinia Lewis, our Interim Legal Director. The Group is divided into smaller teams, ranging in size from 8 to 33 lawyers with all-encompassing support from our Business Management Team. CLGp currently has 6 legal teams providing commercial law support to a range of government departments as well as our litigation team that conducts commercial litigation and provides dispute resolution services to central government. We also have a Property Hub, which advises on specialist property matters.

 The role

We are now looking for ambitious Grade 7 Lawyers and Legal Officers to join our Commercial Law Group (CLGp) as Commercial Litigators and Dispute Resolution Specialists. CLGp offers high quality legal advice on all commercial and litigation issues impacting on the Government, so we often find that our work is being scrutinised by the media and Parliament. This work is far-reaching, so you can expect to handle a wide variety of challenges on issues such as commercial contracts, contract management, public procurement, intellectual property, data protection and information law, construction, competition, admiralty, public law and judicial review.

Providing legal advice on sensitive issues and on questions of policy, you will work with both government colleagues and third parties to handle disputes and reach commercial settlements through negotiation and mediation. Utilising all methods of Alternative Dispute Resolution, you will work primarily on UK-focused issues, but you may occasionally also handle disputes involving other jurisdictions. With the opportunity to develop specialist expertise, you will support Senior Lawyers and the Deputy Director in delivering litigation work, always within deadline.

About you

The Commercial Law Group in the Government Legal Department is a unique place in which to further your career, we are looking for individuals who have some litigation experience, gained within a commercial litigation environment. As a Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive, we will expect you to have completed a training contract, pupillage or qualifying employment, or you will have been exempted from this by the Law Society, the Bar Council or CILEx. With sound legal judgement and great analytical skills, we will also expect you to have commercial and contract law experience. Crucially you will have the capacity to explain complex issues in a way that is easy to understand, and you will have the sensitivity to deliver difficult messages with clarity. As a team player who has good verbal and written communication skills, you will be a proactive individual who has the capacity to be highly persuasive.
