We are the leading children’s communication charity in the United Kingdom and were originally formed in 1888. Our purpose – to make sure that no child is left behind due to struggling to communicate – has never been more relevant. We need good Trustees to help us develop our organisation and continue to grow our reach and impact. Post-covid, 1.5 million children are at risk of being left behind with their speaking and understanding with devastating consequences for their education, mental health and future employment.

We are looking for a Legal Trustee to join our high performing board and chair our remuneration committee. The commitment is for 4 Board meetings of less than half a day per annum plus a full Board Awayday, whilst the remuneration committee meets twice a year, again for less than half a day. In addition, there is time needed to read papers, which you’ll receive a week in advance, and the occasional need to provide expert advice and guidance to the leadership team on specific issues and projects.

We are at an exciting time in the charity’s development as we look to extend our reach, advocate more effectively and digitise our services. You can read more about our latest campaign at https://ican.org.uk/speaking-up-for-the-covid-generation/

Interested in joining us? Do read our recruitment pack, including the role profile, and find out more about the work we do. Applications should be on a CV and covering letter and sent to Sam Pathak, HR Advisor at jobs@ican.org.uk by 23:59 on 4th August 2021 with the heading ‘Application for legal trustee.’ We aim to hold interviews in week commencing 16th August 2021.

We are under-represented at our Board by people from Black and Asian Minority Ethnic backgrounds and we would particularly welcome applications from suitably qualified people from these backgrounds.

I CAN works within the government’s Covid-19 guidelines.

I CAN is committed to safeguarding and welfare of children. We carry out the appropriate vetting and verification on all staff.
