Interested in a career in law, or better still, in law, media and entertainment? Look no further, Sky is opening applications for our training contract programme for aspiring solicitors – this year’s intake will be starting in September 2022!
About Us
With 24 million customers in 7 countries, Sky is Europe’s leading media and entertainment company. Recognised as an ‘Inclusive Top 50 Employer’, we’re working hard to ensure we’re a truly inclusive place to work – a workplace where you can proudly be yourself. We celebrate diversity because different people with different perspectives make Sky a better business. Our customers are incredibly diverse, so we should be too.
Our legal department is no exception and we welcome applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds. Our vision in Sky Legal is to create the Legal Team of the Future, together – a team operating at the heart of Sky and famous for adding value. We want to create an inclusive and diverse high-performing culture, where our people are listened to and are fully involved and able to be their best selves and manage their wellbeing.
We are an award-winning in-house legal team comparable to a full-service law firm. We have multiple legal teams working right across Sky’s business including content, competition, consumer, marketing, data protection, litigation, IP and technology – each with a wide range of subject-matter expertise. We also have a dedicated team delivering industry-leading legal innovation and technology. Our legal team works seamlessly with our commercial colleagues across the organisation, as well as our legal colleagues in Germany, Italy and at Comcast and NBCUniversal.
Our Training Contract Programme
Our training contract programme is now in its second year and this year’s intake will begin in September 2022. The programme is 2 years in duration (with a possibility to reduce by up to 6 months if you have relevant prior experience). The role is based in Osterley, West London and is a full-time position.
You will rotate through up to 4 seats across Sky Legal, giving you the opportunity to develop a broad range of legal skills and experience. Our programme is comparable to that of a top law firm – you will learn everything you need to equip you for your career as a lawyer, including how to draft and analyse a contract, distil and present information, find solutions to problems, advise on legal issues, risks and their impact on business strategy and how to work as part of a high-performing team and build effective relationships.
Throughout the Programme, we’ll provide you with continuous support from Sky’s Training Principal, your manager, other legal colleagues and the wider Sky team. You’ll participate in Sky Legal’s Learning & Development Programme and you’ll have access to a range of personal and professional development tools across Sky, including seminars, workshops and digital courses which will help you along the way.
We’ll also provide you with financial support to attend and complete the required Professional Skills Course.
About You
You’ll have at least a 2:1 or equivalent degree (we will consider mitigating circumstances for a lower grade). If that’s not in law, you will also have a legal conversion qualification (Graduate Diploma in Law or the Common Professional Examination). You’ll also have completed the Legal Practice Course (i.e. you must have received your final results by end of May 2022).
You’ll be passionate about law, media, TV and technology and you’ll be committed to qualifying as a solicitor.
You’ll have a desire to learn new skills, to apply yourself proactively, creatively and flexibly to a wide range of tasks. You’ll have a sharp eye for detail and the ability to organise, prioritise and plan effectively. You’ll be a real team player who likes to collaborate to get the best results.
Your application journey
Complete your application by no later than 31 January 2022. Once your application has been submitted and reviewed, candidates will be invited to complete a verbal reasoning online assessment (look out for our email, you may need to check your junk mail just in case) – this will form the first stage assessment.
We know online assessments can be tricky for anyone who hasn’t experienced something similar, so don’t worry, we will provide you with unlimited access to a practise environment so you can get comfortable with the style of questions before attempting the test.
After the first stage, successful candidates will be invited to submit short written answers to three questions. We are looking to hear more about you, your motivations and also see how you communicate in writing. This second stage will take place towards the end of February 2022.
After the second stage, successful candidates will be invited to submit a short video interview to our people team, recording yourself answering some pre-set questions. This will likely be around April 2022, so don’t worry if you don’t hear from us straight away.
Following that stage, successful candidates will be invited to a final stage interview with our legal team which will happen in June 2022.
