Mergers can bring benefits to the economy and help businesses and markets grow. However, some can harm competition and result in, for example, higher prices, reduced quality or choice for consumers, or reduced innovation.  Principal Case Officers lead initial investigations (Phase 1), using their legal, economic and/or business expertise and project management skills to determine whether there is a realistic prospect of a substantial lessening of competition. Where the CMA believes a merger may be at detriment to consumers an in-depth assessment is launched (Phase 2).


As a Principal Case Officer, you will be part of a multidisciplinary team working collaboratively with your colleagues to ensure issues are investigated fully, evidence is presented accurately, decision making is explained clearly, and merger investigations run smoothly. A typical day may include:


  • Leading cases on a day-to-day basis
  • Preparing and reviewing documents for case delivery
  • Drafting correspondence and preparing documents required for merger investigations
  • Leading contributions to, and as appropriate, chairing internal and external meetings
  • Analysing legal, economic and other evidence necessary for merger cases 

You will take the lead in communicating with the senior management and advisers of some of the leading companies in the UK and globally, as well as officials from other competition authorities around the world. In addition to case work, you will also contribute to developing the CMA’s institutional practices, policy, and know-how.

 The successful candidate will be a lawyer, economist or business consultant with a good track record of advising on and executing complex merger control, or other competition, markets or regulatory cases. This will include experience of successfully delivering projects working both autonomously and with multi-disciplinary teams and delivering results within challenging timeframes. In your application you will also need to evidence excellent communication and interpersonal skills with proven experience of influencing and building relationships with senior internal and external decision-makers.
