The Role
The City of London Corporation is the ancient civic authority for the Square Mile. They are a complex and unusual organisation. The City of London Corporation carry out usual functions of a local authority within the City of London, but they also have important wider responsibilities for areas you might not associate with us – the Barbican Centre, the City of London Police, and wholesale markets such as Smithfield. They are also the charity trustee of 10 open spaces charities, including Epping Forest (232990) and Hampstead Heath (803392). The City of London Corporation are also the charity trustee for the ancient charity, Bridge House Estates (1035628), which – owns and maintains five Thames bridges (including London, Southwark, Blackfriars, Tower and Millennium Bridges); distributes significant grant funding in London in the name of ‘City Bridge Trust’; and administers a substantial London-based commercial investment property portfolio for the charity’s benefit.

They are seeking to recruit a Principal Lawyer (Charity) who can demonstrate legal, technical, and professional skills and experience in property and charity law to advise on a complex and varied workload in the administration of the open spaces charities and Bridge House Estates, including investigations, transactions and projects. This will require strong research, analytical and interpretative skills relating to historic charity governing documents, including legislation; as well as excellent time-management, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to deliver legal services as part of multi-disciplinary professional teams.

Applications
Applicants will be solicitors, barristers or FILEX/CILEX members with at least five years post qualification experience with experience of charity and property law and advising charities holding historic endowment property.
