At the PDS, we specialise in legal aid criminal defence, focusing on providing the best representation to those who cannot afford to pay. Providing and improving access to advice and representation is only part of what we do at the Public Defender Service. We’re working to shape a better system. It’s all about breaking new ground, improving the criminal justice system as a whole, and creating extraordinary careers for the people who join us.

We provide a 24-hour, 365-day service representing clients in need at police stations, Magistrates’ Courts and Crown Courts, and are dedicated to providing outstanding levels of service at all times. It can be a tough job but it’s very rewarding, so if you are committed to public service and are looking for a role at the very forefront of delivering justice, find out more and apply today.

We are looking for exceptional, enthusiastic, and dedicated people to join our team as a trainee solicitor and undertake a Level 7 graduate entry Solicitor apprenticeship. You’ll spend four days a week on practical work experience, with one day per week of study, completing the Police Station Accreditation Scheme within year 1.

You’ll have an interest in representing people accused or convicted of crimes at police stations or court. You will appreciate the complex needs of people caught up in the justice system and be dedicated to working with them compassionately and respectfully. You will be organised and able to think critically and quickly.

In return, we will provide you with the support and training that you need, as well as opportunities to develop your skills and progress within your career. We also offer a range of benefits including:

· Competitive Civil Service pension scheme

· Childcare vouchers

· Cycle2work scheme

· Access to employee savings including high street retailer offers and discounts
